Daily Manna 2014: Warn the People

TEXT: ISAIAH 6:9-13
Key verse: “And he said: Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not” (Isaiah 6:9).
Few things are as despairing as when there is a prior knowledge that one’s action will have little or no effect on the situation at hand. Not surprising, many people would avoid getting involved in what appears to be a waste of time.
Not so for Isaiah. He had just offered himself to run errands for the Lord. So, when he was handed a very strange message to convey to his people about their impending ruin, he had no choice. He received no assurance of great success, but that the people will defiantly ignore him and the word of God - their only means of reconciliation with God. Isaiah’s message was to foreshadow the rejection of Jesus Christ by the Jews of His time. They would neither recognise nor accept Him. Startled by this message, Isaiah wondered whether his labour was to be totally in vain. Not so, the Lord responded. A few would listen. They would serve to show that God’s mercy is available for those who turn away from their despicable ways.
Today’s Christians have the same task to preach the gospel. They should not become despondent because fewer people are accepting the good news. In Noah’s time, only eight people were saved from the deluge. Only four people escaped from Sodom and Gomorrah, while only three made it to safety.
Far from being despondent, we should encourage people not to wait until disaster strikes before turning to God. We should tell them that His mercy and love can avail for them if they show the willingness to amend their evil ways. Spreading the gospel is not only because of Christ’s command to all Christians, it is the only worthwhile activity with which the Lord expects us to occupy ourselves.

Key verse: “Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:5).
Priding ourselves on our spiritual state is one of the commonest temptations faced by Christians. We readily count how old we are in the Lord and what He has done through us. This usually results in stunted growth, complacency and backsliding.
God knew Isaiah well enough. He was soon to become one of Israel’s greatest prophets. He was being called to a special assignment in which he needed a special preparation. His effectiveness was to be hinged solely on his close acquaintance with the Lord. His experience at the time of the vision was clearly inadequate to carry him through the tasks ahead; he must have been unaware of this. He needed to catch a glimpse of the great God in glory, in order to appreciate his own insignificance and insufficiency.
Faced with this wonderful sight, Isaiah finally saw his own inadequacy; he was weak, but God is strong, he was unclean and living among sinful men but God is holy. In terror and humility, he realised how unqualified he was to speak the word of God. But God will always exalt those who humble themselves. Hence, he received the touch of fire to purge him from all inward sinful tendencies and dispositions. Thereafter, he was ready to receive God’s call to higher service.
Most times, our daily experiences, pressures from society and our personal spiritual inadequacies narrow our view of God. They also limit our service to Him. But God’s word shows the lofty height He occupies, how perfect and powerful He is. This should drive us to our knees, with the resolve to die to self. We should be humble and admit our spiritual shortcomings as well as subject ourselves to God’s purging.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The man God uses must be cleansed, cut and cultivated.

News: JAMB Scraps 2nd Choice Options For Candidates
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) - Candidates filling the 2014 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, forms are to be careful, as second choice institutions options have been scrapped by the Board. Therefore, all intending JAMB UTME candidates are hereby advised to carefully make the best choices of their institutions in the 2014 UTME registration which has begun and will end March 14, 2014.
In the light of the foregoing, applicants must only choose one university, one polytechnic, one college of education and one innovation enterprise institute while applying for the UTME. TEXT: EXODUS 6:1-13
Key verse: “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty; but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them” (Exodus 6:3).
Some people are simply ignorant of just how awesome God is. They underestimate His strength and power, and therefore, believe they can literally get away with any action. They would have been more cautious had they known the attribute of God as Elohim, the Creator and Controller of heaven and earth.
God had in fact introduced Himself to Abraham as El-shaddai, the Almighty. Now He showed Himself to Moses as Jehovah, the covenant-keeping God. Seven times in our text, He declared “I will”, to express the certainty of His ability and power in accomplishing whatever He wants.
It was time now for Pharaoh to see what God would do. He says, “I will do unto Pharaoh”, “I will bring you out” of bondage, “I will rid you out of their bondage”, “I will redeem you”, “I will take you to me”, “I will be to you a God” and “I will bring you in unto the land”. Moses and Israel were becoming discouraged by the increased burden, coupled with the threats and audacious words of Pharaoh. Then, God spoke to reassure them that He would surely fulfill His promise to bring them out of Egypt.
We learn that, in times of disappointment and discouragement, we should turn to the Lord and seek solace in His warm embrace. God answered Moses’ questions about the delay, the bondage and the problem in a single verse. “Now thou shalt see what I will do to Pharaoh...” In perplexing situations, wait patiently and expect God to act on your behalf.

TEXT: EXODUS 5:15-23
Key verse: “And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us” (Exodus 5:21).
No lasting achievement ever comes easy. There will be resistance and obstacles to overcome. You may have to endure the misunderstanding of friends and close associates. Above all, if the task is of God, the devil will seek to discourage you and present His promises as unreliable. But in it all, you must remain focused.
After repeated visits to Pharaoh with the demand to free the Hebrews from slavery, all Moses and Aaron got was more pain and suffering for their people. A furious Pharaoh commanded his taskmasters not to give them any breathing space. They were beaten and punished mercilessly for not accomplishing what is clearly an impossible task. Had Moses remembered God’s prediction of Pharaoh’s obstinacy, he would not have felt any sense of failure. Nor did the children of Israel see any respite from their cruel bondage. They cried unto Pharaoh instead of crying to God. As they murmured, their oppression increased.
When believers murmur and complain, they forget God’s past dealings and mercy and become blind to His promises. This displeases God and dishonours Him in the sight of unbelievers. Moses was almost overwhelmed by the situation. Although he presumed to be praying but he was complaining. How often we act like Moses!
Praying should reflect our faith in God and in His promises. Whatever the challenge you face, stop complaining and simply trust God to keep His promises. Ask for mercy and pardon now for past complaints and murmurings, and remain focused on the job He has given you. He will neither leave nor forsake you.

FG pays former PHCN staff N361bn

The Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, said, yesterday, that 43, 375 former staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, have been verified and paid their terminal benefits totaling N361,024,432,338.48.
The image maker of the bureau, Mr. Chigbo Anichebe, said, in a statement in Abuja, that their gratuity and pension entitlements were paid into their Retirement Savings Accounts.According to him, those paid so far represented 94.79% of the former PHCN staff strength. He was reacting to media reports credited to the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Mr. Joseph Ajaero, that 25, 000 former PHCN staff were yet to be paid.According to Anichebe, the “validation of another 2,382 has been concluded and payments are in process”. He continued: “This brings the total number of staff verified to 45, 757 or 95.5% of the purported staff strength of PHCN.
Furthermore, the Committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power is still working tirelessly to validate the remaining 4.5% of the work force.

TEXT: PSALM 10:12-18
Key verse: “Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble” (Psalm 10:12).
In the court of law, the prosecuting attorney must convincingly present his facts to the judge, giving reasons why the judge should rule against the defendant. Likewise, the righteous has a plea to make in the court of heaven against the wicked and the oppressors.
David, apparently at his wits’ end, by the conduct, temper and the very thoughts of the wicked, turned and pleaded with God to rise to vengeance.
The Psalmist knew that “because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore, the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes 8:11). The wicked are more determined in their wickedness because they believe God does not see them. Contrary to their thoughts, God sees, notes and bears in mind every act of wrong doing that men commit. This explains why the Psalmist urged the Lord to deal with the wicked and frustrate his evil plans. He pleaded for the wicked to be tried and punished in the full glare of everyone.
God always respond to the numerous pleas against evil workers by delivering their victims. So, sinners will be punished and separated eternally from the Lord. There is full assurance that as God heard the prayers of the afflicted in the past, so also will He hear the cries of the oppressed. Part of our calling is to expose, fight and eradicate evil wherever it is discovered, be it in our lives, families, and secular engagements or in the larger society.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The wicked cannot go unpunished.

TEXT: EXODUS 18:13-27
Key verse: “Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee. Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God” (Exodus 18:19).
We take so much on ourselves that it is a miracle in itself that many of us do not break down often. We see ourselves as champions or superstars and come to the inexplicable conclusion that we alone are capable of handling things. In the process, however, we often create more problems than we tend to solve.
Moses thought he was doing a great job as he sat daily from morning to evening, judging the cases brought by the Israelites in the wilderness. He didn’t know any other way to handle the matters they brought to him, and thought it was his responsibility to personally attend to their needs. But his father-in-law, Jethro, came on a visit and promptly told him: “The thing that thou doest is not good”. But not stopping at mere criticisms, Jethro advised that Moses learn how to delegate responsibilities to other “able men such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness”. Their role was to handle the small issues affecting the people in sets of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens, respectively. Only the difficult and delicate matters would be brought to Moses. This way, the assignment God had given him would be easier as he shared the burdens of leadership with others.
Jethro then told Moses: “If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.” Quite promptly, Moses, heeding the advice of his father-in-law, chose other capable men and assigned tasks to them at different levels, thereby lightening the burden of his work both on himself and on the people of Israel.
It is not a mark of effectiveness to concentrate responsibilities on oneself. If anything, we run the risk of failing to live up to the expectations both of those who gave us the assignment and those we lead. We must never get to a point where we begin to think that without us, nothing can be done well. When we take so much on ourselves, we risk burning out. Worse still, we become ineffective and therefore, unsuited for the responsibility given to us.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God does not need superstars; He needs servants.

TCN TRAINS 522 ENGINEERS FOR BETTER CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY
Abuja, Jan. 6, 2014 (NAN)
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Monday began the training of 522 of its newly employed engineers as part of plans to ensure constant power supply across the county.
The TCN Managing Director, Mr Mack Kast, disclosed this in Abuja at the orientation programme for the newly recruited staff.
He explained that the training programme, which is in partnership with the National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN), was geared toward transforming the TCN in line with international best practice.
The TCN boss said that the two weeks programme would simultaneously take place in eight centres across the country before the engineers would be deployed to the field.
``I am indeed delighted to have you gather simultaneously in eight different NAPTIN training centres nationwide for two weeks before your formal deployment to your place of primary assignment.
Kast, who expressed optimism on transforming the TCN into a world class electricity company, charged the engineers on the need to lead the change process.
``You are all important in this new era of TCN as we work toward ensuring that TCN is transformed into a world class electricity transmissions company,’’ he said.
He said that the TCN was committed to capacity building and growing of its workforce to meet the current challenges in the nation’s electricity sector.
He said that the management of TCN was working hard with other stakeholders to ensure the realisation of the Federal Government Power Sector Reform Initiative and provision of uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians.
Earlier, the NAPTIN Director General, Mr Reuben Okeke in his remarks thanked the TCN for partnering NAPTIN in the training of the engineers.
He decried what he called the frequent systems collapse in the power sector and stressed the need for engineers to be more
pro-active in tackling the problem.
He pledged to ensure meticulous and professional training of the new engineers in line with international best practice (NAN)
