After two months of announcing its plan to recruit about 500 engineers, the Ministry of Power yesterday disclosed that it has given appointment letters to 522 engineers to work with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The move, which is part of the present Administration’s Reform Agenda in the Electricity Power Sector to address the manpower need of the company and prepare it for improved service delivery can now be said to have taken off.

A statement from TCN said the new engineers were received on Monday, by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Don Priestman, who  congratulated them for being a part of a new era in the company and expressed satisfaction in the fact that TCN is bringing in a crop of skilled young people with the potential to keep the future of the company unfolding as it should.

The MD/CEO stressed the need for hard work noting that TCN has in place an extremely satisfying career path for the new engineers.

Priestman who heads the team from Manitoba Hydro International – the appointed Management Contractor for TCN, personally handed over letters of employment to some of the newly recruited engineers.

Also, the Director General of National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), Engr. Reuben Okeke while addressing the young engineers disclosed that they would undergo training for one year before they are integrated fully in TCN,adding that three months of this period, would be spent in NAPTIN training school, while the rest would be spent in the various regions of TCN, where they would acquire practical operational experiences.

According to an official memo from the Federal Ministry of Power, signed by Mr. Ebenezer B. Olowosejeje, Deputy Director, Appointments, Promotions and Discipline (APD)  for the Honourable Minister of Power, the recruitment exercise cuts across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria, with each zone accounting for 84 candidates and 18 supplementary, totaling 522.

TRANSCORP UGHELLI LAUDS U.S. POWER INITIATIVE FOR AFRICA

The new owner of Transcorp Ughelli Power Limited (TUPL) has said the United States' $7bn Power Africa Initiative is achieving substantial results following the $300 million payment to acquire the generation company.

In a statement, the chairman of Heirs Holdings and of Transcorp, Mr Tony Elumelu said, "It is a major stride forward and has significance for Nigeria, the region and Obama's administration, as it represents positive progress in the fulfilment of Power Africa."

Heirs Holdings recently committed $2.5 billion toward the Power Africa Initiative, a multi-stakeholder partnership between the US government and seven sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria.

Earlier this year, Transcorp signed a cooperation agreement with General Electric (GE) for the development of the power sector in Nigeria.

TUPL announced last week a $225 million payment to Nigeria's Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) representing the 75 per cent balance of the $300 million bid price for the 1000 megawatts capacity plant. TUPL made an initial deposit of $75m (25 percent) for the plant in February this year, the statement said.

The new owners said it will partner with an American investor, Symbion Power to increase the power generation from 300MW to over 1070MW over the next five years.

TUPL had also collaborated with United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) and the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to co-arrange the fund while First City Monument Bank Plc (FCMB) and Fidelity Bank served as co-financiers for the debt financing of the PHCN unbundled power firm.

NEW SUBSTATIONS BUILT ACROSS NIGERIA READY

Nigeria’s minister of power, Chinedu Nebo, says that seven power plants and 150 new substations built across the country are ready for inauguration. The power plants are part of the 10 being built under the National Integrated Power Plants (NIPP) project.

Nigeria has also approved US$10.2 million for the procurement of six 40 MVA 132/33 kV mobile substations, together with spare parts and accessories, to boost electricity supply across the country. The mobile sub-stations will be used to ensure the continuity of supply of electricity to consumers nationwide during major works at existing substations.

"The mobile substations are to make sure that whenever we have to undertake work on substations that are in the state of disrepair or that need to be entirely changed, we have mobile stations that will give respite to electricity consumers at these locations.

"They are also to provide emergency relief where major power disruption occurred, sometimes as a result of disasters occasioned by weather and ultimately they are like spare parts; you can redeploy them whenever the need arises to boost electricity supply."

Tin-Can Customs Rakes N22.8bn In August

The Tin-Can Island Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it generated N22.8 billion in August, this year.

The August 2013 amount surpassed the N18.4 billion collected in the corresponding period of 2012 by N4.3 billion.

The Customs Area Controller, Jubril Zakari, who gave the figures in his office in Lagos on Wednesday, said that the amount was unprecedented in the history of the Command since inception, representing the highest revenue collected till date.

He disclosed that from January to August 2013, the Command collected over N150 billion, which showed increased revenue performance of about N10.8 billion when compared to the total collection of N139 billion in the corresponding period of 2012.

Meanwhile, the Command has denied reports that some of its officers had allegedly dared the authority of the Comptroller- General (CG) of Customs, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde. The Command’s Public Relations Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Chris Osunkwo, in a press statement described the report as baseless, pointing out that no sane officer would speak about the CG in such despicable terms.

He said that the Customs helmsman has the authority to either retain or redeploy any officer he deems fit in order to achieve desired results.

“Anybody certified as a customs officer should understand the authority the CGC has. If he said officers were many and he was going to redeploy them, it is not questionable. Nobody can question his authority. He is only exercising his authority in accordance with the enabling laws of the Service,” Osunkwo said.

He said it was an act of mischief for anybody to say that the Customs boss was playing to the gallery to remain in office.

“We want to state clearly here that the CGC got to where he is presently by merit and not by lobby therefore cannot play to the gallery to remain in office. As a Command, we view the malicious media report as the handiwork of enemies of the Service whose intent is not only to paint the Command black, but to also rubbish the unequalled good works of the CGC since he assumed office,” Osunkwo stated.

He added: “I would not want to credit that statement to any officer because I doubt the identity of the person. Otherwise how would an officer go on the pages of newspaper to say that the CG’s directive is an empty threat? Then the person should get his head examined because it will mean he does not understand the job he claims to be doing.”

We Are Not Recruiting Now, Civil Defense Warns Applicants

The management of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dissociated itself from the information making the rounds that the agency is recruiting now, describing it as false and misleading.

It therefore, said that anyone involved in designing websites for such exercises should be regarded as a criminal and scammer.

The Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolurin, in a statement today, described as disheartening the way people go about defrauding others in the name of job recruitment into the Service even when the Corps is not recruiting.

He reiterated that the advertisement by the Federal Ministry of Interior for job openings is only meant for Immigration Service and not the NSCDC, insisting that “any applicant who patronizes fraudsters in the name of employment into the Corps does that at his own risk.”

NSCDC boss stressed that the Corps is not recruiting and advised job seekers to be careful in order not to fall victim, adding: “if the Corps is to recruit, it is not by asking applicants to contact agents, consultants and persons on website.

“The Corps is hereby warning all job scammers to desist as the law is no respecter of anyone if caught. Applicants should note that ignorance is not an excuse before the law court as the Corps will neither allow its image and credibility to be rubbish by anyone nor take responsibility of crime committed by fraudsters and their cohorts. However, anyone caught in the act either the giver or the taker will be treated for committing the same offence.”
