‘Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction will create jobs’

The Managing Director, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Wolfgang Goetsch, has said that despite the hassles that will be associated with the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the project will create thousands of jobs for both professionals and artisans in the country.

He said the company would handle the reconstruction and expansion of the section I of the road measuring 43.6 kilometres from the old Toll Gate in Ikosi Ketu, Lagos to the Sagamu Interchange.

He added that the project would encompass the reconstruction of the existing two carriageways and addition of a third lane on each side, as well as an interchange at the Redemption Camp, five pedestrian bridges and maintenance of the 10 existing bridges.

Goetsch, while speaking with journalists shortly after President Goodluck Jonathan signalled the reconstruction of the road at the Sagamu Interchange on Friday, said he was happy that the company was awarded a part of the contract.

He said, “Julius Berger Nigeria Plc received the letter of award on June 13, 2013 from the Federal Ministry of Works. The company has the task of rehabilitating, reconstructing and expanding the expressway as well as rehabilitating 10 bridges. The former four-lane stretch will be widened to six lanes and complemented by a flyover bridge as well as five pedestrian bridges.

“It will be extended to six lanes and the old one will be rehabilitated. We hope that the government will provide sufficient funds so it will be done in time.”

Goetsch also said Julius Berger was planning to process 1,200,000 tonnes of aggregates, 698,000 tonnes of new base course, asphalt binder and wearing course as well as 41,000-metre concrete median barrier.
